From April 25 to May 6, Portion has invited artists from various backgrounds to join us in sharing their own captured moments that have survived time to tell everlasting stories on identity.

What is Identity?

What is identity? Why do we attach meaning to people, places, and moments? How do appearances, beliefs, and expressions influence our perceptions of the world? Do our interpretations of these things and ourselves evolve over time?

It feels as though questions like this should have simple, straightforward answers, however, it can be tricky to articulate these pronouncements into words. Photographers and filmmakers have a unique ability to communicate these themes on a layer deeper than words.

Meet the Featured Artists​​

Oliver Ojeil

Meet Oliver Ojeil: a Los Angeles based film director & fashion/celeb photographer. Through his photography, he yearns to evoke emotions of melancholy and nostalgia, often through the mixture of dramatic chiaroscuro lighting and highly emotional expressions and postures, which he combines with his use of light and color temperature in dramatic ways that intensify the moment. He is highly influenced by classical paintings, especially the Renaissance and Italian masters. He often strives to modernize the application of the studies he has done on the renaissance in his cinematic and photographic work. Oliver’s work has been exhibited internationally in various cities and his most recent short film "Take Me In Your Arms" has been an international success at film festivals.

Ward Roberts

Ward Roberts is an independent conceptual artist who creates exquisitely composed photographs drawing on themes such as the effects of loneliness and isolation in the modern world.

The artist’s perspective is fresh and engaging, the sophisticated aesthetic are often contradicted by subtle unscripted moments. A soft drenched color pallet is a common theme. There is innate energy at the core of his work, one which is harnessed and marshaled into every detail in the composition. Roberts’ work is in many ways a rebuttal of the prevailing trend of urban, gritty style contemporary photography. There is a dichotomy at play in his fine art images which simultaneously recall the mastery of medium and calculated patience of remote academic painters, yet his subjects and presentation feel completely new and contemporary.

Jeremy Cowart

Jeremy Cowart has spent the past 15 years as a photographer, specializing in celebrity portraiture and humanitarian photography projects around the world. Before becoming a photographer, he spent time as both an abstract painter and a graphic designer. All of these mediums recently came together when Jeremy released his first NFT series called "Block Queens", which combines his paintings, portraits and drawings together as fully interactive NFTs. The body of 999 NFTs sold out in seconds in February of 2022. Jeremy is now focused on many upcoming drops, spanning 1/1s and generative work.

Galen Oakes

Galen Oakes is a photographer, visual creative, and entrepreneur. His work captures moments in a distinct, vibrant pantone of colors populated by subversive subjects in surrealist worlds. His portfolio features iconic imagery captured over a 15-year career on the moon-like deserts of Burning Man and the world’s biggest stages at Coachella, along with provocative, surrealist fashion spreads, and intimate portrait work with the likes of Freddie Gibbs for Mixmag.

Brandt Ryder

Brandt Ryder is a landscape and nightscape photographer based out of Colorado. His photographic approach is focused on high dimensionality landscape and nightscape images that create strong emotional, even visceral, responses for viewers. Ultimately, Brandt hopes that his photography can serve as a medium to inspire others to conserve, protect, and appreciate the wild places and dark skies left on earth.

Jamie Johnson

Jamie Johnson is a photographer specializing in children documentary projects and well as wet plate collodion photography. As a mother and documentary photographer whose bread and butter comes from photography, Jamie's passion for faces of the next generation has been a life long focus. She has traveled the world, capturing images of children and childhood around the globe. From Laos to Cuba, from the Amazon to Mongolia, around the world and back, she has found a universality in the world of children, and her passion grows stronger with each new adventure. The lifestyles, cultures, and traditions of growing up around the world are closely examined in her photos, and each connection she makes with her young new subjects creates lifelong friendships with the families.

Ante Badzim

Based in Sydney, Ante Badzim is an award-winning exhibiting artist creating visuals that showcase the finer details with a minimal approach. Leading him to create digital & print content for global brands, galleries, art agencies, and diverse publications.

"My approach is to show the true beauty of the subject, where it demands attention by introducing space and minimising distractions. The simplest of things, when isolated, can represent something beautiful. What we take for granted often seems to be the most important, when I bring attention to these simple elements, it can function as a reminder to truly appreciate our surroundings.

The fine details and primitive experiences are becoming rare in contemporary life. I want to celebrate the beauty that is overlooked by creating visuals that offer moments of reflection and appreciation."

Erin Naifeh

Erin Naifeh: "I have always been a wanderer. I’m curious, imaginative and seek depth. I see the magic in life and connect with spirit. Although I love talking about the many layers of life, I could win an award for being a great listener. My intention as an artist is to be an excellent vessel."

Arvind Karthik

Arvind Karthik's passion for the Indian wild is a childhood fascination come true. Brought up in Bangalore, he grew up watching film series like The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling and many other wildlife documentaries on National Geographic and BBC. Fascinated by cameras from a young age, he aspired to become a professional wildlife photographer and a wildlife filmmaker. He got a degree in instrumentation engineering and is now employed as a manager of operations.

Selvon Ramsawak

Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Selvon Ramsawak found himself going to school in the heart of the city for both high school and college. He would walk the streets of New York borough to borough finding beauty in unique compositions, intersecting streets and framing views to portray the city the way he saw it.

Dane Isaac

Dane Isaac, a commercial, portrait and street photographer focuses on the usage of light and storytelling.

Hailing from the Isle of Spice, Grenada, a country with a fascinating history and deep culture. His upbringing has shaped his view on the world and how it is then translated through his work.

Pol Kurucz

Pol Kurucz was born in Budapest and spent his childhood in Paris. A stage director and photographer, in 2011 he founded the artist collective, Kolor Collective, with which he tackles themes such as afro-feminism and consumerism. Since then, his photographs have appeared in major publications including Vogue, ELLE, and Nylon. Kurucz has lived in Bahrain and Portugal, but is now based in Sao Paolo.

Jake Lewis

Jake is a UTAH and PNW-based photographer and filmmaker. He specializes in natural landscape photography and commercial videography and strives to convey his passion for the outdoors through his work

Josh Rubin

Josh Rubin is passionate about creating concise and engaging narrative through experiences, visuals and words. His strength lies in an ability to mine for the most interesting angles of a story and then synthesize the findings in to a format appropriate for the intended audience. He’s a photographer, interaction designer, entrepreneur and the co-founder and Executive Creative Director of COOL HUNTING—a 19 year old independent publication highlighting innovations in culture, design and technology for a global audience of creative professionals. He earned a BA in Cognitive Science and Photography from Hampshire College and a Master’s from NYU's Interactive Telecommunications Program, where his 1999 graduate thesis focused on modular, scalable, touch-screen interfaces.

Beth Mancuso

Beth Mancuso is a Minnesota-based portrait and landscape photographer. Beth is living her dream of traveling and teaching, she leads photography workshops all across the world.  In 2020 she was on the National Geographic Channel on the TV show Assignment Inspiration. She is also an official National Geographic YourShot Photographer. Her work has been featured by ABC News, Sony, Tokina, Outdoor Photographer, Tamron, Midwest Living, My Modern Met, Huffington Post and more.

Mateo Romero

Mateo Romero is a visual artist recently based in Colombia. His work is about exploring surrealism and dreams and usually uses spiritual subconscious topics to get inspired. A lover of astrology and fashion, Mateo seduces his eye making images to make him feel something when he sees it.

Nina Rodrigues

Nina Rodrigues is a Venezuelan photographer, videographer and designer working currently out of Miami. Passionate about contrast, Nina's work captures the darkness within the light of her subjects.

Jenny Abrams

Jenny Abrams, formerly Shayna Batya, is an editorial and commercial photographer. She was born in Manchester, England (hence her football obsession), and is now living in Miami, FL. Jenny’s work gravitates toward the likeness of people, identity, and subcultures.  

Her selected commercial clients include Google, Mercedes, Art Basel, Adidas, LVMH, Redbull, AT&T, Philips, Stella Artois, Soho House, San Pellegrino, SPG, Royal Caribbean, Ted Baker, and Rent The Runway. In addition, Jenny's work has been published by Travel + Leisure, The Guardian, Instagram, NBC, Vice, Soccer Bible, and Stones Throw.
